Summary: Fig picking for the making of sweets and marmalade

Availability: Usually from the beginning of August until the end of October

Capacity: 50-100 participants

Description

The group will be transported to the farm where they will be divided into teams depending on the size of the group. Following a brief demonstration on how to distinguish which fruits to collect from the fig-trees, each team will be given 2 plastic bags. One of the bags will be filled up with figs which are not yet ready for consumption. These will be used for the preparation of a traditional sweet preserve which also includes almonds and flavors. The 2nd bag will be filled up with figs which are beyond ripe (overdue). These one will be used for the preparation of fig marmalade.  Brief demonstration on how to distinguish the figs needed for each preparation method will precede the actual harvest.

Once the picking has been completed, half the teams will proceed to the sweet preserves preparation station and half the teams will go to the marmalade preparation station. Teams will later switch stations so that they all finish both activities. Please, note that both preparation procedures are quite time consuming and a significant amount of time will be needed for the both of them to be completed. Nevertheless, at the end of the day, participants will take home their own home-made Cyprus traditional fig preserves and their own fig marmalade
